With the world busy talking about Miley Cyrus' toking at the MTV Europe Music Awards last night, we all seem to have brushed over the fact that Sacha Baron Cohen kind of killed an old lady at the 2013 Britannia Awards last night in Beverly Hills. Whoops?
It happened as Cohen accepted the Charlie Chaplin Britannia for Excellence in Comedy award last night. Salma Hayek first came out on stage to introduce the award, as well as an elderly woman in a wheelchair named Grace Cullington, supposedly the oldest living actress to have ever worked with Charlie Chaplin (the picture they show of her as a child with Chaplin in 1931, however, is that of Mary Pickford's niece Gwynne, in about 1919).
When Cohen is called on stage to accept the award, Cullington gifts him with a vintage cane, which he then proceeds to do a Chaplin-esque jig with—before promptly falling and knocking Cullington, wheelchair and all, off stage. Classic.
Later, during his speech, Cohen confirms that the entire thing was a gag: "Grace Cullington is the oldest, no, sorry, was the oldest surviving [Chaplin co-star]...I dedicate my award to her. This is obviously a tragedy. She has upstaged me. But on the bright side, what a great way to go, giving an award to me. Thus, she’ll probably make the Oscars In Memoriam segment."
