On Dec. 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed 20 first graders and six employees at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn. On Thursday, the destruction of the school began.

Back on Oct. 5, the town decided to accept $50 million in state funding to demolish the school and build a new one in its place. This came five months after a task force advised the town to tear the building down. Public building and site commission chairman Robert Mitchell told the New York Times that the building will be destroyed gradually; the process should be completed by the first anniversary of the massacre.

He added that workers had beeen instructed to destroy anything that could be identified or associated with the school.

Furthermore, the Times adds that Newton's first selectwoman E. Patricia Llodra says that no townwide event will be held on Dec. 14 because "[the] community is committed to creating a long-lasting and sustainable ‘good’ to honor those who lost their lives in a senseless act of violence."
