Apple’s senior VP of design Jony Ive is preparing to auction off a customized version of Apple's Mac Pro tower for charity next month.
Along with industrial designer Marc Newson, Ive has created a special iteration of the powerhouse computer that will be sold at Bono’s (RED) auction at Sotheby’s to benefit the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The device’s specs haven’t yet been disclosed but photos reveal a sleek, bright-red aluminum body. It’s expected to go for between $40,000 and $60,000, which is significantly more than the $2,999 pricetag the standard next-generation version will have when it becomes available in December.
The auction will also feature other objects customized and curated by Ive and Newson, including an Hermès saddle, a pair of rose-gold Apple earpods, a Leica camera, and a Steinway grand piano.
