It seems that no one knows if Will Smith is going to appear in the upcoming Independence Day sequel—not even the film's director. In a new interview with IndiewireRoland Emmerich revealed that it's taking so long to figure out whether or not Smith will be involved with the film that there are now two versions of the film's script, one with Smith and one without. From the interview:

None

So, basically, no one knows anything, and Emmerich seems to kind of be freaking out because of it. When asked how everything else was going with the film, Emmerich reportedly sighed, and commented, "[It's] a daily battle...the budget, the schedules, the actors..." Aww. He just sounds so sad.

Not much has been released about the plans for the film, but it seems like either storyline—the one with Smith and the one without him—would focus a lot on his character's son from the original film, who is now all grown up (and will potentially be portrayed by Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan). Aliens and massive desctruction will also be involved, because it wouldn't be a Roland Emmerich film otherwise.

As of now, the sequel is set to hit theaters on July 3, 2015.
