Valve's president, Gabe Newell, teased a Steambox hardware reveal and says the future of gaming will be Linux-based. Speaking at Linuxcon, Valve's founder and president gave details about the company’s long-held belief in the future of Linux. Linux is an open operating and programming system that allows anyone in the know to create and modify their own games for free and allows for in the communication between many different types of devices: phones, consoles, computers, ect.

Newell also gave details about the long-teased Valve hardware, dubbed the Steambox, that Newell has claimed will revolutionize computer and console gaming forever but had gone into media blackout about six months ago.

“Next week we’re going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities that we see for bringing Linux into the living room and potentially pointing further down the road to how we can get it even more unified with mobile.”

Newell says in only a week Valve could be testing its living-room friendly hardware. Why be excited about this possibly mythical console? Because Valve has a history of making groundbreaking developments, from Half-Life to Steam, Valve has been quietly revolutionizing the way we play games for 15 years. At the very least we imagine the Steambox would allow us to directly connect and quickly run all Steam-based games from Valve's services.
