The shitstorm surrounding #Batfleck apparently could've been completely avoided. Before Ben Affleckofficially signed on to be the new Caped Crusader, initial reports didn't mention him at all, instead listing Josh Brolin as a front-runner in a list of names that also included Ryan Gosling. When Affleck came out of nowhere to win the cape and cowl many assumed the Brolin-Gosling rumors were just that. But now, speaking to the Huffington Post, Brolin confirms that some form of discussion did indeed take place: "I didn't have conversations about it, but Zack, that was part of his idea. It just didn't turn out. It's OK. It is OK. You know, another scenario might have worked better, but I'm happy for Ben."

He also expressed sympathy for all the heat Affleck is catching from the fanboy community: "I want him to kick ass and I want everyone to love it and kind of eat their words." Would there have been as intense a backlash if Brolin got the part? He does seem to fit Zack Snyder's idea for an older, grittier Batman. Then again, with everyone still basking in the afterglow of The Dark Knight Rises, barely a year old, backlash was probably inevitable regardless of who ended up in the hot seat. But now in addition to comparisons to Christian Bale, Ben will have to contend with what-if's regarding Brolin, especially if his performance does end up, you know, sucking.
