The last time Ryan Murphy spoke about Glee's memorial to Cory Monteith, scheduled to run as the third episode of the show's upcoming fifth season, he and co-creator Brad Falchuk had just begun to plot it out. Now he confirms to Deadline that the tribute will not be direct, which is to say, Monteith's character Finn Hudson will not die from overdose. In fact, the episode might not explain his death at all.

Murphy and Falchuk are opting for an episode that celebrates life instead of one that warns against the dangers of addiction. Some might accuse them of backing down from a chance to address addiction and the real-life loss in a meaningful manner. Here's how Murphy explains it: "This episode is about a celebration of that character’s life.” That might be weird for some people, but it felt really exploitative to do it any other way."

The cast and crew will begin filming the episode this week. You can read Murphy's full comment to Deadline here. Do you think the script should've been more explicit in addressing Monteith's issues?
