"The Lone Ranger" Is Bombing in the Box Office

Despicable Me 2, however, is not.

None

Another blow for Disney's The Lone Ranger: In addition to terrible reviews, the film seems to already be bombing in the box office. According to Deadline, the Johnny Depp-starrer only managed to pull in a measly $9.6 million on opening night, which is nowhere near close enough to help it earn back its monster budget of nearly $250 million. In its favor, it did manage to earn a B+ CinemaScore from audiences, so its possible word of mouth could help it rise in the box office, but, with those numbers, it seems unlikely the film will rise above second place in the box office for the four-day weekend.

Actually performing well, on the other hand, is Universal's animated film Despicable Me 2. Last night it managed to pull in a whopping $34.3 million, which actually puts it at the third highest opening day ever for an animated feature. Those numbers put it on track to easily earn about $120 million domistically over the weekend, which is huge for the Fourth of July, a time when people arent actually going to the movies that much.

As for the rest of the box office: Monsters University came in third last night with $5.4 million earned, The Heat managed to come in at number four with $5.2 million, and Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain rounded off the list at number five with $4.7 million earned.
