A "Sharknado" Sequel May Be In The Works

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

None

Still reeling from the shlock-masterpiece that is SyFy's Sharknado (is there an Emmy for best title?) TV movie? Try to contain your excitement: SyFy execs are already discussing plans for a sequel (Sharknado: The Revenge perhaps?)

The movie may not have wowed in the ratings (only 1.4 million tuned in), but its buzz - specifically its Twitter presence - broke records, with a peak of 5,000 related tweets per minute, which included attention from a wide range of celebrities, from Mia Farrow to LOST co-creator Damon Lindelof. One of Damon's tweets expressed an interest in writing the sequel, but we'd warn him to be wary of the Sharknado fanbase turning on him the way Alien fans did in response to his script for Prometheus.

Sharknado survivors Ian Ziering and Tara Reid both say they're game for part two, probably because SyFy producers are, curiously, the only ones calling. Thomas Vitale, executive vice president of programming at SyFy told THR, regarding a sequel: "The truth is that this has all happened so quickly. It’s been such a whirlwind day. We’ve had a lot of meetings, emails. I’m not being coy, [but] that’s obviously being talked about. There may be some kind of announcement coming forth but there’s nothing going to be announced now just because we haven’t had real discussions with the real people we have to talk to about that."

In the meantime, if you missed out on the life-changing event, an encore presentation will air July 18th.
