It looks like after years of rumors, the long-awaited sequel to 1994's Dumb and Dumber is officially happening. According to Us Weekly, star Jeff Daniels has confirmed that he and Jim Carrey have agreed to return for the Peter Farrelly/Bobby Farrelly-directed sequel, Dumb and Dumber To.
"Jim has been against all sequels, and you know, understandably so," Daniels, who currently stars in HBO's The Newsroom, explained. "But he turned 50 and that will mellow you out, and suddenly he's going, 'Let's have some fun. ... Come on,' and we're going, 'Great,' and so the Farrellys said, 'This isn't a money grab. Let's really write a great second movie that takes the original and then blows it up even further, and so I think they did that."
According to Daniels, the script is "painfully funny," and will see BFFs Harry and Lloyd "middle-aged and still that stupid."
"Our IQ has not gone up one point combined," he divulged. "So it's a frightening thing. You're gonna see the two of us standing there trying to put thoughts together and you want to put underneath, 'Kids don't do this at home.' It's that stupid." Hopefully, he means a completely different kind of stupid than the kind the 2003 straight-to-DVD prequel, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, was—but considering Daniels, Carrey, and the Farrelly brothers weren't at all affiliated with that film, there's hope!
Universal Pictures has reportedly picked up the distribution rights for the film.
