For people who have blood cancers like leukemia or diseases like sickle cell anemia, there is a cure. And it’s in the hands of ordinary people. Be The Match® helps cancer patients in many ways, including finding the marrow donors who can save their lives. They operate the world’s largest listing of potential marrow donors.

Patients are most likely to be a match with someone of the same race. For instance, African-Americans have more complex tissue types than other race groups, making donor matching more challenging. The likelihood of finding a match increases for African-American patients if more African Americans become registry members.

With their new campaign, "5 Weeks: 5,000 Actions," Be The Match is hoping to spread the word about the need for African-Americans to become involved. Over the course of five weeks, the nonprofit hopes to get 5,000 meaningful online actions taken to drive awareness about this donor disparity. From spreading the word to friends about the need for diverse donors via Facebook or Twitter, to joining the marrow registry, there are many ways people can help.
