J.J. Abrams Was Always a Big "Star Wars" Fan, But "Star Trek" Not So Much

He's finally talking about his plans for the movie.

So far, J.J. Abrams has been relatively quiet about his plans for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, but that's looking like it's finally starting to change. In a new interview with Empire Online, Abrams disclosed some of his thoughts about the project, including how he was always more of a Star Wars fan than a Trekkie. In his own words:

Sounds good! As for what persuaded him to take on the high-profile project after actually turning it down once, Abrams said that it was a conversation with film producer Kathy Kennedy that changed his mind. "My knee-jerk reaction was that I’m in the middle of working on the Star Trek movie and I can’t even consider it. But then time went by and I got further along working on the movie and getting to a place where I had done most of the heavy lifting," he said. "So when I met with Kathy Kennedy we just started discussing it and I was able to actually engage in the conversation. I went down to tell Katie, my wife, and I said 'I had just a very interesting conversation with Kathy.' That was the beginning."

Additionally, Steven Spielberg encouraged him to take the job: "I will say that Steven [Spielberg] was very encouraging of Star Wars. It’s funny because I talked to him about it and it turned out he knew all about what was going on."
