G.I. Joe: Retaliation has already exceeded expectations for its opening weekend. So far, it's made $132 million worldwide—$51.7 million domestically.

It's the second-biggest Easter weekend opening ever, behind 2010's Clash of the Titans. Large parts of the movie had to be reshot last year due to poor screening reactions. Its release was pushed from summer 2012 to this weekend.

Channing Tatum's character was originally killed off, but after he became a bona-fide movie star in 2012 (Magic Mike, The Vow, 21 Jump Street), Paramount decided to rethink G.I. Joe.

"Clearly this was a movie that felt like it should be in 3D, so [director] Jon Chu went back and did an excellent job in making that happen. Certain parts of the story also needed to be massaged, and [Paramount film group president] Adam Goodman and his team worked with Jon to get it to a great place," said Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore.

The film's budget was kept "minimal" at $130 million, but luckily for Paramount, they've already surpassed that on opening weekend. The sequel "of sorts" to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra also stars Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson. It also has an A- on CinemaScore, so perhaps Easter moviegoers are on to something.
