Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have already given us some of the best WWII movies and TV series ever in the form of Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, and The Pacific, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo is going back to HBO with another WWII miniseries that will deal with the war in the skies, titled Masters of the Air. The series will be based off of Donald L. Miller’s book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, and it will focus on the men of the Eighth Air Force. Hanks and Spielberg will act as executive producers, along with Gary Goetzman

Despite the overwhelming cost of a project like this, HBO is interested because of the ratings that Band of Brothers and The Pacific brought in during their respective runs, and the fact that they were both big hits during award season. Justified creator Graham Yost, who wrote several episodes of the previous two miniseries, is likely to re-team with Hanks and Spielberg for Masters of the Air as well. We’ll have more information on this project as it develops.
