In a surprising bit of news from Friday’s box office totals, Texas Chainsaw 3D beat both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained in terms of overall gross, according to Collider. Chainsaw brought in $10.2 million, while Django and Hobbit made $6.16 and $5.2 million, respectively.
That’s a huge win for the low-budget Texas Chainsaw sequel to beat two high-profile movies with built-in audiences. Sure, it was the only wide release of the weekend, but did anyone really expect it to walk away with the crown, especially as it was going up against Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-Earth and a critically-acclaimed Tarantino flick? We didn’t think so.
We’ll have the full weekend box office results when they’re released tomorrow to see if Texas Chainsaw can hold on to the lead.
