For many, blacking out in college is seen as a right of passage. But after MIT graduate student Dhairya Dand woke up in the emergency room one morning, with no recollection of what happened the previous night, he knew he had to find a solution to his alcohol-induced blackouts.

Dand developed a digital ice cube that measures a person's alcohol intake. Every time you have a drink, just throw the ice cube in your cup. With each new drink, the cub darkens. The darker the cube, the closer you are to a black out.

If the ice cube begins to flash, but the person does not stop drinking, the cube then texts the person's friends to come take him or her home. Dand said he plans to further develop his digital ice cubes through a Kickstarter campaign.
