If we didn't know any better, we'd think the Republican party was crafting some elaborate swindle to win future presidential elections. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is leading the charge to have state legislatures award electoral votes based on congressional district rather than giving them to whoever wins the state's popular vote.
Republicans receive considerably more congressional districts in presidential elections than Democrats, but typically lose the ones where there are more people. To illustrate what would happen if they're successful, The Huffington Post created a map that shows how the 2012 presidential election would've played out if states operated on a congressional district plan.
As you can see, Mitt Romney would've narrowly won the election instead of getting mopped by President Obama like he did in real life. In Virginia, a plan to adopt the system will be presented to State Senate, but it's unlikely that many states will be in favor of the change.
Could this suggest that the GOP feels the only way to bounce back from a loss is to change the rules? Imagine if this principle was applied to sports.
