"To The Wonder" Finally Gets A Poetic Debut Trailer (Video)

One of the most polarizing directors is back sooner than we expected.

Terrence Malick is one of those directors that you either absolutely love or loathe. But whatever your feelings are for him, you can’t deny his place in the annals of cinema. His career has been just as mysterious as the movies he puts out, and it’s nearly impossible to ever fully understand his work or his reclusive personality. In his new movie, To the Wonder, Malick returns after the transcendent triumph of Tree of Life for a movie that is a meditation on love itself.

The movie has already debuted on the festival circuit to the typical mixed reactions of most Malick films, but we’re just now getting a full trailer for it. Though the movie stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdamsOlga Kurylenko, and Javier Bardem, they play second fiddle to the sweeping music and hypnotizing camera work of Malick. Set against mysterious images of the main actors is a voiceover by Bardem, who philosophizes on the main themes of the film. It works perfectly to give us a look at how beautiful To the Wonder could potentially be.

This is said to be a companion piece to the existential Tree of Life, so if you embraced Malick’s work there, To the Wonder should be a no-brainer. However, if you’re not a fan of what the man has done up until now, chances are this won’t change your mind.

To the Wonder will be released on April 12.
