In a period spanning April 2010 and July 2012, the District of Columbia welcomed 30,600 new residents, increasing the city's population to 632,323.

That figure is higher than the populations for Wyoming and Vermont. This number is powered by people moving from other states, as 8,953 new people made D.C. home between July 2011 and July 2012.

The growth in population is also fueled by new life. Some 9,000 babies have been born annually since 2008, with the city's first and second wards producing the most children. This has also promoted the Census to name D.C. as the country's fastest growing state, followed by Utah, Texas, and North Dakota.
