For the first time in over a decade, HP is not the world's largest manufacturer of laptops and PCs. In a new report out from Gartner, the Chinese computer maker Lenovo has passed up the iconic American brand to become the world's leader in the category.

In the third quarter of this year, Lenovo sold 13,767,976 computers while HP sold 13,550,761.

PC shipments overall are down eight percent year-over-year, with the industry on track to shrink in size for the first time in over a decade.

HP sales in the U.S. are still strong, however, with the Silicon Valley company outselling all of its competitors here, including Lenovo, by a wide margin. And with such a narrow global lead eked out by Lenovo, it's certainly within the realm of possiblility that HP will regain the top spot down the line.
