That's right New York, it's official: The city's Board of Health has approved the proposed soda ban, which will outlaw big sodas and other sugary drinks at any establishment that receives an inspection grade from the health department. The ban, which was suggested by Mayor Bloomberg in the spring, will limit the size of these beverages to a maximum of 16 ounces.

It should be noted that the ban does not apply to convenience stores or supermarkets.

The decision is a controversial one. Restaurant and beverage industry reps say the city has exaggerated the role of sugary drinks in contributing to weight problems. Even members of the Board of Health have issues with the ban, as one member, Dr. Sixto R. Caro, refused to vote, citing skepticism.

Residents view the decision as an intrusion into their lives, kitchens, and pockets. Do New Yorkers need to be saved from themselves when it comes to eating? Is this what it's come to?
