While Samsung said its now interested in acquiring Research in Motion or licensing the BlackBerry software, IBM has turned up as a possible suitor for the beleaguered mobile company's lucrative enterprise-services unit, according to a report from Bloomberg.
Unnamed sources say IBM made an "informal approach" about the possibly buying the enterprise division, which runs a secure network of servers and services that support RIM's BlackBerry devices.
The sale would go against the wishes of RIM's new CEO Thorsten Heins, who made it clear that he would rather license the BlackBerry software to companies rather than sell off portions of the business. If RIM is banking on BlackBerry 10 turning the company around, as Heins says it is, a sale of its most valuable asset would not be a smart move.
