Seventeen people were injured this morning as a gunman opened fire at a Tuscaloosa, AL, bar that was popular among University of Alabama students. Authorities say that the man continued to open fire, even as patrons fled. The incident took place at the Copper Top Bar around 12:30 a.m., and while multiple people were shot, it’s still unclear if any students were involved.

Customers initially thought fireworks going off, but one man who was caught by one of the gunman’s bullets immediately realized that was not the case. According to Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steve Anderson, the man initially opened fire through a window before picking people off as they ran outside.

Of the 17 victims, four were admitted to DCH Regional Medical Center.

ABC 33/40 reported that the incident is connected to another shooting in the IndianLakes Subdivision of Northport.

Nobody is sure what motivated the attack, and no arrests have been made. It's terrible, and also highly reminiscent of Nick Cave's "O'Malley's Bar," a fictional bar no one wanted to see become real.
