Despite the move towards mobile computing, part of the reason why powerful desktops such as the Mac Pro remain in-demand is the film community. Big rigs are required for dumping, editing, and coloring footage. Yet, even machines like Apple’s top-of-the-line behemoths don’t have the ideal specs to handle the massive 4K footage files from RED cameras. So, HP and RED have conceived the perfect computing solution, the RED Z820, and it’s damn impressive: liquid-cooled 16-core Intel Xeon processors, 32 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA Quadro 5000 GPU video card. With a built-in reader for RED’s proprietary Mag cards, the machine can playback 4K footage in real-time, unlike most. No release date or price has been set yet, but expect five figures. If you can afford a RED camera, then it’s only right.
