Confirming one of the worst kept secrets in Silicon Valley, Google officially unveiled the Nexus 7 tablet on stage this afternoon at its I/O conference in San Francisco.
The Nexus 7 runs the just-announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and was built in cooperation with Asus. As the name implies, it features a 7-inch 1280x800 HD display and is powered by a quad core Tegra 3 processor with a 12-core graphics processor.
Nexus 7 is built for consuming media and playing games and works seamlessly with Google Play. The launch screen displays all the most recently viewed TV shows, movies, magazines and games in your library.
Google is selling the Nexus 7 directly through the Google Play store starting today. A n 8 GB model costs just $199, putting it squarely in Kindle Fire territory. There's also a 16 GB version that will go for $250. Shipments are said to begin in mid-July.
