Ebay, which also owns Paypal, will soon be the only major tech company to have a data center--a bigger energy consumer than the standard corporate outpost--powered by fuel cells, after announcing the construction of a new site in South Jordan, Utah.

In comparison, all tech giants--even Google--rely upon the national grid for their energy, which is fueled by coal. Fuel cells, on the other hand, use natural gas to maintain a charge similar to that of a battery.

The new center will remain connected to the power grid, merely as a backup option.
