The Witcher developers CD Projekt Red could be about to create the Blade Runner of video games, as they've announce today that they'll be adapting the classic pen-and-paper system Cyberpunk for their next "Triple-A RPG" project.

Studio co-founder Marcin Iwinski said at the developer's Summer Conference that the game "would have all of the hallmarks of the Witcher series". But its cyberpunk aesthetic, at least, will be relatively unique, especially as far as video games are concerned.

The Cyberpunk game promises to be as mature as CD Projekt's other series, with a "richly detailed, non-linear" and "complex and gripping story".

Unlike in The Witcher and The Witcher 2, though, the new game's protagonist will be player-created, and they'll be able to equip "cybernetic implants" that could be similar to those in the Eidos-developed Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

The press release sent out today even features a lofty endorsement from the original Cyberpunk designer, Mike Pondsmith, who said, "CD Projekt Red is the team we’ve been hoping for."

During the conference the studio also revealed that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has sold more than 1.7 million copies on PC and Xbox 360, and that the game's "Enhanced Edition" will be heading to Mac OS X PCs this fall.
