Apple is planning to upgrade its iCloud technology with photo sharing features that will compete directly with Instagram, according to the Wall Street Journal.

iCloud already stores photos from your iPhone and Mac in the cloud, but the new version will allow users to edit and share sets of photos with other members of the iCloud community, who will then be able to comment on them.

Instagram, currently the dominant player in mobile photo sharing business, was recently acquired by Facebook, which has had a prickly relationship with Apple in the past. By striking out on its own with a new kind of photo sharing service, Apple could seek to diminish Facebook's control over the category.

The new version of iCloud may be announced at Apple's WWDC event on June 11.
