The Orlando Sentinel has provided a different version of what George Zimmerman told investigators the night he killed Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman told police that, as he spoke to a Sanford, Fla., dispatcher, Martin circled his vehicle on foot, intimidating him. A source close to the investigation says that while the story he gave police hasn’t changed, Zimmerman never mentioned this to the dispatcher. Furthermore, the new details reveal inconsistencies with Zimmerman’s story.
According to the source, Zimmerman told police that Martin had his hand over his mouth as they fought. Authorities don’t believe that to be true, because someone is heard screaming for help during the 911 call. If it were Zimmerman, and his cries for help were muffled by Martin, they wouldn’t be audible.
Zimmerman also told police that Martin reached for his gun as the two struggled. According to the source, there is no evidence to support this claim. His lawyer Mark O’Mara declined to comment on this new information because he has yet to view Zimmerman’s statements to police.
In Zimmerman’s call to the police, he doesn’t mention anything about Martin circling his video, although that’s what he told police when questioned that night and in following interviews. Per the source, this is the sequence of events that Zimmerman provided:
Zimmerman spotted Trayvon, called a nonemergency police number and began describing the teenager. While he was doing that, Trayvon came toward his vehicle and began to circle it.
Zimmerman is currently free on bond as he awaits trial.
