Newell Talks "Half-Life 3": What's Taking So Long?

We mean "Ricochet 2", of course.

Gabe Newell has opened up a little bit on the development of the next Half-Life game, though he refers to it only has Rocochet 2. You didn't think it was going to be simple, did you?

The sequel to Ricochet, a multiplayer TRON knock-off developed by Valve over a decade ago, doesn't exist, of course. But if Newell actually said the words "Half-Life 3" out loud he'd draw the wrath of eye of Sauron down on his whole family, etc.

“In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance,” Newell said recently on the podcast 7DCD.

“We end up changing our minds as we're going through and developing stuff, so as we're thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you're saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we'd like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2.”

But, he said, it makes more sense for them to continue its development on the down-low, for now. “The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we're going through would probably drive people more crazy than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what's happening next,” he said.

In response to another question, Newell replied, "Everyone who was working on Ricochet 2 continues to work on Ricochet 2."

Again, yes—that is code for Half-Life 3. Unless there turns out to actually be a Ricochet 2, in which case we'll eat our crowbars. Think there's any chance of HL 3 making an E3 appearance this year? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.
