Max Payne 3 is heading dual-Berettas-blazing onto shelves May 15, but for die hard fans and those needing catching up on the story so far, Rockstar has teamed up with Marvel to create a brand new comics series.

The series will "delve into Max's troubled past—exploring the events that occurred in and around both Max Payne and Max Payne 2, leading up to Max Payne 3 while also shedding new light on Max's early years," according to a press release recently sent out.

On story duties are Grand Theft Auto writer Dan Houser and Remedy Entertainment's Max Payne and Alan Wake writer Sam Lake. Marvel Zombies' Fernando Blanco is handling pen and ink, and Marvel artist Greg Horn is on cover art duty.

Issue #1, "After the Fall", is coming out for free in the next few weeks from Rockstar's site and the official Max Payne 3 portal, as well as other digital comics retailers. Are you looking forward to delving back into Payne's mythology? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.
