"New Year's End" is a short fan film from director Jared Potter that recounts an important event in the history of Bioshock's underwater city, Rapture. Shortly before the first game begins, a group of splicers—junkies addicted to gene-altering cocktails of plasmids—helps bring about the city's downfall. The sound and set design and special effects are top-notch for a fan film.
Here's a statement from Potter: "BioShock is one of those rare pieces of entertainment that stays with you. The story, the characters, the world created by the team at 2K and Irrational left an impression on me unlike any game I’ve ever played. I was drawn immediately into the idea of making a fanfilm. Not a parody, not a fake trailer mashup of other people’s work, but a truly original creation set within the world of the games. I wanted to go there. I wanted to visit the city of Rapture, and that desire kept me going through the months of post-production. It has turned out to be one of the greatest experiences I’ve had working on a movie, and I hope to somehow get the chance to return."
