In a bold challenge to the hacker community, Google is offering up to one million dollars in cash prizes to anyone who can breach its Chrome browser. The challenge is part of the hacker conference Pwn2Own, at which browser makers routinely offer up their wares for cracking, but Google's introduction of money into the equation is unusual.
The Internet giant said in a blog post that it's providing the extra incentive because so far no one at Pwn2Own has been able to hack Chrome, even though all other major browsers have been breached.
Is there some tacit bragging going on there? Probably, but Google reasonably points out that if it doesn't know where the cracks are, it's tough to figure out how to make Chrome stronger.
Hackers will be awarded $20,000, $40,000, or $60,000, depending on how serious their breach of the program is. Read more at Chromium.
