Wikipedia Fundraising Drive Ends, Nets $20 Million

Efforts fall short.

None

You’ve no doubt seen the contributors’ photos on every Wikipedia page over the past month, asking for donations to the site to keep it running. Sometimes it’s been the mug of founder Jimmy Wales offering a humble testimonial while other times, it’s been a random hot chick whom the site has claimed to have ghost-edited thousands of pages. Right.

Regardless, between those and the solicitous emails, the site’s mother company, the non-profit Wikimedia foundation, raised $20 million from one million donors, a healthy figure, though short of the mark of the site’s operating budget of $28.3 million.

To make up the margins, the likes of Google co-founder Sergey Brin will provide donations and grants.
