While some comic book properties are making big bucks in Hollywood in the form of blockbuster movies and television shows, others toil in development hell as script and budget issues ground these projects before they ever take off. And that's exactly the problem with the television adaptation of the cult-favorite indie comic, Powers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The article goes on to state that FX has decided not to pick up the pilot episode of the series, which was set to star Jason Patric. The reason behind FX's change of heart is the fact that the show apparently never achieved the right tone or quality that the network was looking for. In order to fix these problems there would have to be a complete overhaul of the original pilot, and that would wind up creating nightmare budget issues.
"We didn't pick the pilot of Powers up; we went back and Chick Eglee, who had written it, did a fairly substantial rewrite that would require pretty extensive reshoots of the pilot," John Landgraf, president of FX, said. "Right now we're in the process of deciding whether to pull the trigger on the reshoot."
The original Powers comic revolves around a cop named Christian Walker, who deals with crimes of a super human nature. It was created by industry veterans Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, and was originally published by Image Comics before switching over to Icon Comics.
With its stylized art and action-heavy scripts, there is no reason why Powers couldn't morph into a very successful animated series if this live-action attempt falls through.
