There is no doubting the fact that Bridesmaids was one of the surprise hits of 2011. With a budget of less than $40 million, the movie went on to garner raves reviews and earn more than $280 million worldwide. In the aftermath of such a staggering performance, Universal Pictures began to work towards releasing a sequel to the movie in hopes of replicating that success. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the company might have to do it without the star of the original, Kristen Wiig

In an interview with the site, Wiig stated, "We aren't working on that." She continued, "Annie and I aren't planning a sequel. We are writing something else." She is referring to her writing partner on the first film, Annie Mumolo, who both seem to be cold towards the prospect of another go-around in the gowns.

However, the decision to make a sequel to Bridesmaids isn't exactly in the hands of Wiig, as Universal owns the rights to the property. And an exec at the company told The Hollywood Reporter, "We are over the moon with the success of Bridesmaids, and if we do a sequel we want to get it right." The exec continued, "We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we'll move forward."

The movie's producer, Judd Apatow, seems open to the idea of a sequel, but wants to make sure the idea is right. "The key is we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better than the first one," Apatow told THR. "We don't want to do it unless it can be great. I don't think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this year."

Fans of the original Bridesmaids shouldn't hold their collective breath for a sequel, because this issue doesn't seem like it's going away any time soon.
