Shigeru Miyamoto, possibly the most revered game designer in the world, will soon step down from his current position at Nintendo, he told Wired recently. If your heart leapt up into your throat when you read that, you're not alone—ours did too. But this could actually turn out to be good news:
“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself,” Miyamoto said. “Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.” A new project from the creator of Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, Star Fox and more could be shown off as early as next year, according to Wired.
We're getting chills just thinking about playing a game that Miyamoto has a more direct influence over or even develops entirely by himself. The titles he's been overseeing for the last decade and more have been wonderful, but now we're looking forward to a solo project or two to remind us what makes his games so fantastic in the first place.
