Yesterday, FremantleMedia Enterprises announced at MIPCOM 2011 in Cannes that they've acquired the rights to the Universal Soldier film series. The early ‘90s franchise which was directed by Roland Emmerich back in 1992 and starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as dead Vietnam War vets resurrected by a shady secret Army project is getting a reboot as an original TV series.
This isn't the first time Universal Solder: The TV Show has hit the rodeo. Back in 1998-99, an ill-fated production ran on the boob tube with no one batting an eye. Now, the new IP will be written by Damian Kindler, who wrote for Stargate SG1, Stargate: Atlantis, and was the creator of the Canadian sci-fi series Sanctuary. Here's to hoping that the outerspace junkie can come up with an innovative idea to put the butts in the seats.
As for the film's original action giants, they'll be too busy reclaiming their former glory in Sylvester Stallone's ensemble machismo flick The Expendable 2. Directed by Simon West, the thriller is scheduled for release on August 17, 2012. As for the Universal Soldier television show, we'll keep you posted as more develops.
