Rutger Hauer, a constant presence as a character actor in mainstream cinema of the past few decades, takes on perhaps the most gruesome role of his life in this year’s Hobo with a Shotgun. With the cartoonish spirit of “Jackass” and the sinister, washed-out color scheme of many 70s horror flicks, the film takes the vigilante scenario on a blood-soaked detour. After arriving in a town run by evil capitalist barons, Hauer’s hobo witnesses far too many atrocities for a man already on the edge of sanity. Acquiring the titular shotgun, he goes on a rampage against the scum of the earth populating the town, removing heads and limbs at his leisure. He's like Travis Bickle, only more creative with the disposal of enemies. Not exactly for the faint of heart, but an appreciation for all things over the top will help.
