In order to combat our culture of piracy—admit it, illegal downloading is just as routine as brushing your teeth—ISPs, Hollywood, and the record industry have finally agreed on a six-point deterrent system for piracy.
After the failure and embarrassment of lawsuits, the strategy is now “educational.” The first few piracy offenses will garner e-mail warning notices, which web users will be forced to acknowledge. By Level five, connection speeds reduce. And at Level six, there’s a block on Web browsing.
AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Verizon, and Time Warner Cable have all agreed to enforce the new rules, hoping to lessen the estimated $16 billion lost to piracy annually by music and movie companies.
