Mad Men won't return to the airwaves until 2012, but that doesn't mean there isn't time for idle speculation about what the future holds for Don Draper and his ex-wife Betty. At an Emmy awards panel discussion in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, creator Matthew Weiner did just that.

“I don’t know what it is for them in the future,” he said when asked about the possibility of a Don/Betty reconciliation. “They had a rough year. Don was not good on his own. That’s part of why he proposed to Megan.”

The rest of the cast was tight-lipped on the matter, but star Jon Hamm said that Betty and Don "will never not be part of one another’s lives."

The fact that actress January Jones is pregnant, and will likely be on the cusp of giving birth when Mad Men returns to production, could play a part the future of Betty and Don, as well. As could the fact that Betty was a callow caricature during season four. Maybe just get rid of her altogether and let Don have a happy ending?
