Everyday a star is born. 53 years ago today, Prince Rogers Nelson was brought into the world at Mount Sinai Hospital (see the second image for a photo of the hospital during its construction in the '50s) around 6:17 p.m. In 1991, the hospital closed and became the Phillips Eye Institute (2215 Park Ave, Minneapolis).
We don't know if Prince is too bold like his father, though it seems unlikely that anyone could be bolder than the man who recorded "Head" and "Sister," but we do know that he was named after his father's stage name, Prince Rogers. Both of Prince's parents were jazz musicians and inspired Prince to start learning music. He wrote his first song when he was seven and started performing around Minneapolis during his teenage years.
He released his first album, For You, at the age of 19 and had much success afterward. Whether representing himself as Prince, The Artist, or as a symbol, he has released over 30 albums and sold about 100 million records.
Prince continues to tour around the world, inviting the most beautiful women on stage and then giving them the boot. Yup... he's still got it. Happy Birthday, Prince.
