In 2009, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot was a revelation for audiences. Gone were the heady sci-fi talk and alien politics of the earlier films, replaced by an action packed, and incredibly streamlined, summer blockbuster. But while the first movie seemingly went off without a problem, the sequel might have run into a bump in the road.
According to Deadline, the much anticipated Star Trek 2may get delayed from its original June 29, 2012 release date to a much more manageable 2012 fourth quarter holiday release. The reasoning is that with no script completed, and director Abrams having just recently completed this summer’s Super 8 (in theaters June 10), there simply won’t be enough time to deliver the goods. Only a 70-page outline exists for the movie and Abrams hasn’t even formally announced his return, though Deadline says that should be coming any day now.
While Paramount hasn’t confirmed any of this yet, all of the evidence points to this decision being the logical choice. So while one of Paramount’s 2012 summer tentpoles will be M.I.A., a holiday release date should give the filmmakers enough time to ensure a quality product.
However, Star Trek 2 will have to battle off against The Hobbit and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel next winter. That’s a whole lot of nerdy goodness happening all at once.
