The United States has the world's 12th fastest Internet speed, according to Akamai's "State of the Internet" report released earlier this year. Denmark, Taiwan, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and South Korea all have faster overall Internet connection speeds. Comcast wants to change that.

The nation's largest cable operator today announced it's new Extreme 105 Xfinity Internet Service which will deliver download speeds of up to 105 mbps. Comcast says the service will allow users to download 4 GB in five minutes.

The technology behind the new service is Comcast's DOCSIS 3.0 technology that was introduced at the 2008 CES.

The service will be available in major cities like San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, with more being added on a rolling basis.
