Super Fast Google Fiber Optics Coming To Kansas City

Kansas will get an early taste of the future thanks to a new Google initiative.

The lucky people of Kansas City, Kansas will soon be surfing on lightning fast internet as the recipients of Google's coveted new fiber optic network.

Google announced a competition last year to bring the network, capable of reaching speeds around 1 GB/s, to an American city as an experiment to push forward network technologies. After a year of consideration, and many persuasive pleas from cities around the country, we now know the winner.

“In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations. We’ve found this in Kansas City. We’ll be working closely with local organizations including the Kauffman Foundation, KCNext and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop the gigabit applications of the future.”

Google says it's not looking to become the next big Internet provider (for now, at least) and is just doing this initiative to stoke innovation. The network is expected go live throughout the city in 2012.

Congratulations Kansas City! We can come over, right?
