It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Henry Cavill? The relatively unknown British actor has been chosen by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures to don the cape and the "S" shield in Zack Snyder's superhero reboot. The Sucker Punch director fawned over the 27-year-old bloke, stating, via press release, "In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures, and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry."
Cavil had been considered for the blockbuster roles of Batman, James Bond, and even the previous version of Superman, yet struck out in each case. With this Superman job, he's the new picture of perseverance. Cavill, who most recently co-starred on Showtime's The Tudors, should remove any traces of Brandon Routh's underwhelming Clark Kent in 2006's Bryan Singer-helmed Superman Returns, though that's not exactly "mission impossible." Superman: Man of Steel is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2012. David S. Goyer is writing the script, with Christopher Nolan and brother Jonathan Nolan on board as producers.
