Ever since the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville reported his findings of a post-revolution America, citizens throughout the world have sought to rid itself of monarchies and institute "democracy". Power to the people!

Well, it's not so easy. Discriminatory voting restrictions and the need for obscene levels of money to campaign has made the transition complicated. At times, power is just straight-up jacked and flaunted like a chain on WorldStar. Here's a brief glance at the most questionable power-grabs in recent history...

1. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran, 2009
• The latest case of questionable electoral victories has the streets of Iran on fire. Ahmadinejad's suspiciously enormous margin of victory ignited a frenzy of protest that has President Obama watching his words very carefully. Let's hope this nuclear power reaches a reasonable solution that's more ballot than bullet.
