A rise in fame often coincides with a compromised artistic vision. At this crossroads, the choice for artists is usually either, a) Do I change this and attract more listeners, or b) Do I stay the course and simply maintain the fanbase I have? FKA twigs has responded with a resounding c) None of the above. The U.K.-based singer, songwriter, dancer, director, and artist has grown in popularity over the last couple of years while simultaneously adhering to her avant-garde mission statement. She is the rare talent that both challenges and satiates.

At 27 years old, twigs, born Tahliah Barnett, has been creating all her life, but in the last two years, she has gone into warp speed, releasing 15 videos, two EPs, and her debut album, LP1. Cedar Pasori, managing editor of Complex Style and Sneakers, spent time with twigs this winter while she was working on her new video for "Glass & Patron" and prepping her forthcoming EP3, while photographer Matt Irwin captured some stunning images of the artist. From her early days pursuing ballet and finding R&B and hip-hop, to signing with Young Turks and getting nominated for a Mercury Prize, twigs traces her rise to fame, the struggles she's gone through in the name of preserving her art, and how she has redefined what it means to be a pop star along the way. Enjoy the ride; FKA twigs is just getting started.
