For this edition of Soundtrack To My Life, we speak to BBC Radio 1Xtra host DJ Ace—a legend from the days of Channel U who has been a mainstay in the UK music scene for over a decade.

Earlier this year, he took over the weekday slot from Trevor Nelson; big shoes to fill, given Nelson's stature in UK music. Undaunted, DJ Ace has gone on to build a show that is now one of 1Xtra's most popular, consistently bagging big name guests (see below) and, of course, breaking the up-and-comers.

Regular listeners to his 1Xtra show won't be too shocked to see such a varied—and well-informed—selection; his weekly slot remains pretty eclectic (something that's reflected in the inclusion of Rodney P and Nirvana in this list), but at his heart, Ace is an R&B guy through-and-through.

His support of UK artists over the years has been invaluable to our homegrown R&B scene. Both his R&B Hour shows on 1Xtra and his DJ sets across the world have played a huge role in putting UK R&B on the international stage and, as his picks and our conversation show, Ace knows both US and UK iterations of the sound up and down.

"This might be my favourite R&B tune of all time. I play this in sets to this day! It always goes down well at my residency at RecordBox; I think you'd struggle to find someone who didn't like this song."

A Tribe Called Quest — "Electric Relaxation"

"Midnight Maruders is my favourite album of all time. Every track on it has been my favourite tune in the world, at one point, but 'Electric Relaxation' has been my favourite the most times."

Mary J. Blige — "Share My World"

"Mary J. Blige is one of my top five artists, of any genre. She definitely deserves her queen status. I hold her in a high regard because I feel like shes my aunty [laugs]. I often argue with people about her best album; popular opinion is her second album, My Life, but mine has always been Share My World. Front to back, this album is amazing. No skippable tracks and the perfect R&B album combination of uptempo, singalongs, and slow jams."

LL Cool J — "Around The Way Girl"

"Mama Said Knock You Out was the first album I ever boughtprimary school days. I used to listen to this album on a big Alba walkman with no rewind button [laughs]. This particular tune would help me channel my younger inner sweetboy, and help with my playground interaction with girls."

Sounds Of Blackness — "Optimistic"

"Way, way, way before the #OptimisticChallenge, this has been my ultimate feel-good record. My absolute go-to record in tough times or when I'm feeling down... Still works to this day, and I'm so happy it got some shine last year when it went viral."

"In secondary school, I had a mixtape series called The Front Room Sofa Selection. Cringe, man, I know [laughs]. This was basically a slow jam CD that you would throw on after school while you were entertaining bae on the front-room sofa after school, before mum got home. All the usuals were on thereJodeci, H-Town, Faith Evans—but, when this tune came on, it was PEAK for the front-room sofa [laughs]."

Rodney P & Skitz — "Dedication"

"I rinsed this record in the late '90s and early 2000s. I was heavily involved in the UK hip-hop scene and this, for me, was the absolute national anthem of the scene. I was a London Posse fan since the early '90s, but when Rodney P and Skitz linked up to make music I became a fan all over again. Rodney P is an icon of UK underground music and one of my idols, so imagine how I felt when I got signed to present a radio show on 1Xtrathe same station as the Riddim Killa! I was gassed."

SWV — "Anything" f/ Wu-Tang Clan

"In the '90s, movie soundtracks were the best! Some soundtracks were so good they made you forget how terrible the film was. This song was from a good movie but even better soundtrack. The Above The Rim soundtrack has to be one of the best collections of music from the '90s and 'Anything' was one of its breakout hits. Coko from SWV needs to be recognised more for having one of the best R&B voices of all time. What she can do, vocally, is no joke. Then, to top it off, you had the raw ruggedness of Wu-Tang on the remix—this tune was insane!"

Wiley — "Eskimo"

"When I bought my first car, I got a 12" sub bass in the boot just so I could drive around my area blaring this song out. For an entire summer, people could hear me coming miles away because I was playing this tune full blast from my car [laughs]. Classic one from Wiley."

Nirvana — "Lithium"

"To this day, I don't know what this track is really about but I absolutely feel it. I've never taken time out to read the lyrics or research the story behind the track, but the song has always resonated with me. It's deep."
