After months of anticipation and a handful of single releases, Lil Yachty’s debut studio album, Teenage Emotions, has finally dropped. The 19-year-old Atlanta rapper teased the project about a month ago—revealing its polarizing cover art as well as its lengthy tracklist, which includes appearances by everyone from Migos (“Peek a Boo”) to Diplo (“Forever Young”) to YG (“All Around Me”).

The day before Teenage Emotions hit streaming services, Lil Boat sat down with Beats 1's Zane Lowe to discuss his place in the rap game and creating the 21-track album. He said the LP was originally intended to arrive in late 2016, but was delayed after he lost his voice for a couple months. But it seems the setback was a blessing in disguise: “If I would have dropped it on Christmas, it would have been nothing like it is now,” he told Lowe. “It's a completely different vibe, I didn't even know I was going to make an album like this."

As the title suggests, Teenage Emotions focuses on the wide range of mental states of everyday youth, including everything from heartbreak to happiness. Yachty previously stated the album was intended for his diehards, not for industry players. He echoed this sentiment with Lowe, explaining the importance of connecting with his fanbase.

“That’s how you get the real love,” he explained. “Someone will love you, but if they feel like they know you or they can relate to you, it’s a real genuine, solid love, even when you’re down. As opposed to, ‘Oh yeah, you got a hot song, man I like this song, this song’s dope.'”

Teenage Emotions is available to stream on Apple Music and can be purchased on iTunes.
